Four-Year-Old Daria Has A Heart Defect. Open Heart Surgery Can Save Her Life. Please Help.
Daria is four years old. She was admitted to the hospital with severe shortness of breath. Physical examination revealed a short systolic murmur in her heart. Doctors saw moderate cardiomegaly or enlargement of the heart on her chest x-ray.
Daria's echocardiogram showed a large atrial septal defect (ASD). An ASD is a birth defect in which the wall that separates the upper chambers of the heart does not close completely. Children with this defect are at an increased risk for developing a number of complications including chest pain, fatigue, frequent respiratory infections, shortness of
breath and even sudden death from heart failure.
Daria was successfully operated at the Bakulev Center in Moscow on July 11, 2011.
Dr. Sergei Gorbachevsky,
a leading specialist at the Bakulev Center, surgically corrected Daria's atrial septal defect. Daria was discharged on July 18th and returned home to the Smolensk region of Russia a healthy girl. Her parents Alexei and Valentina thank everyone
who helped their daughter become a healthy child.
