Six-Year-Old Elisaveta Has A Heart Defect. Open-Heart Surgery Can Save Her Life. Please Help.

Elisaveta has had more than her share of heart problems for a six-year-old child. She was admitted to the hospital because she had severe shortness of breath. A medical evaluation showed that her symptoms were due to aortic valve regurgitation. This is a condition that occurs when the heart's aortic valve doesn't close tightly. Aortic valve regurgitation allows some of the blood that was just pumped out of Elisaveta's heart's main pumping chamber (left ventricle) to leak back into it. The leakage of blood may prevent her heart from efficiently pumping blood out to the rest of her body. As a result, she feels fatigued and short of breath.

An echocardiogram showed conditions typical for corrected transposition of the great arteries with arterial aortic valve incompetence. Transposition of the great arteries is a severe congenital heart defect in which the two large arteries that carry blood out of the heart are connected to the heart abnormally. As a result, the normal flow of blood in the body does not exists and the child does not get enough oxygenated blood.

Elisaveta was operated on in 2006 when she was just one year old because of a ventricular septal defect with pulmonary hypertension. A ventricular septal defect (VSD) describes one or more holes in the wall that separates the right and left ventricles of the heart. A ventricular septal defect is one of the most common heart defects that are present at birth. The most common symptoms of a VSD include: shortness of breath, hard breathing, paleness, failure to gain weight, and frequent respiratory infections.

Emergency funding from Russian Gift of Life, USA helped pay for Elisaveta's surgery.

Elisaveta was successfully operated at the Bakulev Center
in Moscow on March 22, 2011.

Dr. Sergei Gorbachevsky, a leading specialist at the Bakulev Center, replaced Lola's mitral valve. After being discharged from the hospital, Elisaveta returned to her parents in Moscow a healthy girl. Elisaveta's mother, Svetlana and her father, Alexander thank everyone who helped their daughter become a healthy child.
