Ten-Year-Old Olga Has A Heart Defect. Open-Heart Surgery Can Save Her Life. Please Help.
Olga is a ten-year-old girl who was admitted to the hospital because of shortness of breath with congestive heart failure. Her heart could not supply sufficient blood flow for normal breathing.
An echocardiogram showed that she has congenital mitral valve incompetence. The valves in the heart, when functioning normally, allow blood to flow only in one direction. When a valve malfunctions, blood can flow back in the wrong direction causing a variety of symptoms including shortness of breath. If left untreated, this condition can be fatal. Her condition has been present since birth.
Emergency funding from Russian Gift of Life, USA helped pay for Olga's surgery.
Olga was successfully operated at the Bakulev Center in Moscow on February 22, 2011.
Dr. Sergei Gorbachevsky, a leading specialist at the Bakulev Center, replaced Olga's mitral valve. Olga was discharged from the hospital on March 5th and returned home to the Vladimirsk Region of Russia a healthy girl. Her parents Sergei and Nadezhda thank everyone who helped their daughter become healthy.
