Save A Child from Heart Disease
Please Help Save Sasha.
Aleksandr (nicknamed Sasha) was born with heart disease. He is 14 months old and in addition to his heart defect suffers from Trisomy 21 (T21 Down Syndrome). He had been operated by the local Voronezh team in April 2016 at the age of right months. On October 19, 2016 he had open-heart surgery to close his ventricular and atrial septal defects. His pulmonary artery banding was also removed by Dr. Sergey Bykov of the Voronezh Regional Hospital.
Children with T21 have an increased risk of pulmonary hypertension, but Sasha came off the ventilator 10 hours after surgery and was feeding enthusiastically from his mother in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on the first day after surgery. He left the ICU two days post-operatively. In many cardiac centers in the former Soviet Union, parents are prohibited or severely restricted from entering the ICU. The Voronezh Regional Hospital has a progressive approach and has adopted an open visitation policy from the visiting team.
Sasha is pictured here with Nurse Natasha, who enjoys care for the little boy.
The Gift of Life, Inc. and Russian Gift of Life USA are helping to fund medical training missions to Voronezh, where Polina was operated. The first mission took place in November 2013.
Aleksandr was successfully operated in October 19, 2016.
