Save A Child from Heart Disease
Please Help Save Vika.
Vika was born with heart disease.
Vika is thirteen days old and has pulmonary atresia.
Pulmonary atresia is a birth defect of the pulmonary valve, which is the valve that controls blood flow from the right ventricle (lower right chamber of the heart) to the main pulmonary artery (the blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the lungs). Pulmonary atresia is when this valve didn’t form at all, and no blood can go from the right ventricle of the heart out to the lungs. Because a baby with pulmonary atresia may need surgery or other procedures soon after birth, this birth defect is considered a critical congenital heart defect. Congenital means present at birth.
Vika had had an urgent operation just a few days prior to the fifth medical mission to Nizhny Novgorod, and was on a ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit when the team arrived. She had a complication of too much blood flow to her lungs. Her blood pressure dropped severely, and circulation stopped. She required 30 minutes of resuscitation in the Intensive Care Unit by the Novick Cardiac Alliance and local teams working collaboratively. She went for an emergency re-operation, where the previously placed shunt was carefully narrowed by a little over 1 mm, which stabilized and rebalanced her circulation. Her recovery was expectedly prolonged after such trauma but she came off the ventilator four days later and left the Intensive Care Unit on April 11th. Vika was doing very well but will require at least one more surgery in the next one to two years.
The Gift of Life, Inc. and Russian Gift of Life USA are helping to fund medical training missions to Nizhny Novgorod, where Vika was operated. The first mission took place in November 2014.
Vika was successfully operated on April 5, 2017.
