Save A Child from Heart Disease
Please Help Save Vera.
Vera was born with heart disease.
Vera is one year old and has an atrial septal defect – more commonly known as a hole in her heart. Specifically it's a hole between the wall that separates the upper heart chambers. As a result, blood continues to flow from the left to the right atria. If too much blood moves from the right side of the heart, pressure in the lungs builds up. If the defect is not repaired and the hole closed, Vera risks heart failure, atrial fibrillation, pulmonary over-circulation, pulmonary hypertension and stroke.
The local Nizhny team, with no assistance, performed surgery on little one year old Vera. Her surgery was done by one of the more junior local surgeons and she will likely need no further intervention. Vera left the Intensive Care Unit the very next day. Vera is pictured here with her mother.
The Gift of Life, Inc. and Russian Gift of Life USA are helping to fund medical training missions to Nizhny Novgorod, where Vera was operated. The first mission took place in November 2014.
Vera was successfully operated on April 7, 2017.
