Eight-Year-Old Alina Has Patent Ductus Arteriosus. Heart Surgery Can Save Her Life. Please Help.
Alina is a precocous eight-year-old child. She loves to draw. You’d never know she had a life threatening heart defect. Alina has a PDA (patent ductus arteriosus), a condition in which a blood vessel fails to close normally after birth. As a result, she has abnormal blood flow between the aorta and pulmonary artery, two major blood vessels that surround the heart. If the PDA is not closed, Alina risks heart failure, bleeding in the lungs, problems with lung development, and endocarditis (an infection of the inner lining of the heart).
Alina's grandmother, Tatiana, made the long journey from Russia with her.
Gift of Life, Inc. and Russian Gift of Life, USA raised the funds necessary for Alina's surgery and travel expenses thanks to your generosity.
Alina was successfully operated at Saint Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York on October 6, 2010.
Alina's grandmother had tears of joy and gratitude in her eyes after she was told that the surgery was successful. She wants to thank everyone for helping her granddaughter. For footage of Alina's grandmother thanking the Gift of Life for saving her granddaughter's life, please click here.
