Tatiana has an ASD, an atrial septal defect. It's a birth defect in which the wall that separates the upper chambers of the heart (atria) does not close completely. Tatiana risks pulmonary hypertension, stroke, and heart failure if it the ASD is not fixed.
Tanya was among more than two hundred children screened for heart defects on a Russian Gift of Life sponsored screening mission. Based on her condition and the lack of funding for its correction in Russia, Tanya was accepted at Saint Francis Hospital in New York.
