One-Year-Old Igor Has A Heart Defect. Open-Heart Surgery Can Save His Life. Please Help.

Our colleagues at the Russian Assistance Fund received this letter from an orphanage:

"Igor came to the Children's Home from the city hospital's infectious diseases department with no information about his birth. We learned that the boy's parents lead an anti-social way of life (which often means alcoholism or substance abuse). Papers have been filed to have his parents stripped of parental rights. In October 2009, specialists from the Tomsk Cardiac Center examined little Igor. They diagnosed him with a ventricular septal defect and pulmonary hypertension. Igor's height and weight is below normal. He does not walk or speak yet, tires easily and cannot move around for a long time. He has had bronchitis and pneumonia six times in his short life. His condition has gotten worse. He is short of breath and turns blue even when resting. The Tomsk cardiologists recommend urgent open heart surgery, but we do not have the necessary resources to help Igor. That is why I am appealing to you in the great hope that you will help fund this child's surgery. After the operation, we hope to find a family where Igor will be loved."
Ludmila Buzunova
Chief Physician, Children's Home
Altai Region

Dr. Igor Kovalev, a leading cardiologist at the Tomsk Cardiac Center, says: “A lot of blood enters the pulmonary artery through a hole in the septum between the right and left ventricle. This is dangerous. If we do not intervene, there will be irreversible damage to the pulmonary vessels. He urgently needs open heart surgery. Then he will be able to develop normally and grow up healthy."

Igor was successfully operated at the Tomsk Cardiac Center in Siberia on November 19, 2010.

Cardiac surgeon, Evgeny Krivoshchekov reports that Igor's operation was successful "blood flow to the heart has been restored, both defects were repaired." Ludmila Buzunova, the Chief Physician of the Children's Home in Altai, is grateful to all who helped Igor and expresses the hope to find Igor new parents.
