One-Year-Old Marina Has A Heart Defect. Heart Surgery Can Save Her Life. Please Help.

Marina is one-year-old and was recently diagnosed with a heart defect by our medical colleagues in Tomsk, Russia. Marina’s defect can be treated without the need for open-heart surgery, using a medical device called an occluder. Without this operation, Marina’s condition will get worse. Please help her become a healthy child. Here is her mother’s appeal translated from Russian:

“My husband and I work hard – he loads lumber, I clean in a hospital cafeteria – our income is tiny. I enclose a certificate as proof our family is poor. We live in a village in a house without anything. Our eldest daughter, Diana is a first grader, she, thankfully, is healthy. We just found out about little Marina’s heart defect. Our daughter caught a cold, we called the doctor, and she was the one who told us: "she has a heart murmur.” She sent us to the regional children's hospital, and after all the evaluations and consultations, the doctor said we have to operate on the baby: the right side of her heart increased. We were very scared. And for an operation we need a lot of money. We’ve never even seen such sums, we don’t even know what they look like. The doctors say the defect has to be closed now before it gets worse. People recommended we ask you for help. We are very worried about our baby. All we want is for little Marina’s life and health not to be in danger. Please help us raise the money for the operation. Thank you to everyone who saves children. We wish all of you good people health!"

Dr. Evgeny Krivoshchekov, a leading specialist at the Tomsk Cardiac Center, says: “It is best to close her atrial septal defect through endovascular surgery. And this should be done now. Marina will easily make it through the surgery and will soon be completely healthy."

Marina was successfully operated at the Tomsk Cardiac Center in Siberia on June 9, 2010.

Marina’s atrial septal defect was recently treated without the need for open-heart surgery, using a medical device called an occluder. The heart defect has been completely eliminated, Marina is healthy, and will grow and develop normally. Marina's parents Elena and Alexander would like to thank everyone who helped.
