Seventeen-Year-Old Tatiana Has A Heart Defect. Open-Heart Surgery Can Save Her Life. Please Help.
At age four, Tanya was given a death sentence. She had a heart defect. Doctors in Russia would not operate.
Fortunately for Tanya, the Gift of Life program accepted her and brought her to the United States in 1996 for open heart surgery. She was given an 8% chance of surviving the operation. But that was better than the zero percent chance back home. Tanya survived the surgery and has grown up relatively healthy.
At age ten, however, doctors in Novosibirsk said she may have an aneurysm. They kept monitoring it each year. Finally at age seventeen, they said Tanya could no longer wait. The aneurysm had to be removed. Left untreated, an aneurysm can rupture, which can cause massive bleeding that may lead to death.
Tatiana's mother Irina made the long journey from Novosibirsk, Russia with her.
Gift of Life, Inc. and Russian Gift of Life, USA raised the funds necessary for Tatiana's surgery and travel expenses thanks to your generosity. Irina and Tatiana are forever grateful to everyone who helped save Tanya's life a second time.
Tatiana was successfully operated at Cohen's Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York on April 27, 2010.
